The Real Noah

Some notes I wrote down, when the Movie Noah came out a few years ago.  I found all of this in the Pearl of Great Price, another set of Scriptures that the Jesus of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints!!! Noah was 450 years old when Japheth was born, 492 year old when Shem was born and 500 when Ham was born.  Moses 8:12 Noah was to cry repentance unto the people.  He was give 125 years to get the people to repent. Moses 8:17 Noah Father is 777 years old when he dies.  Moses 8:11 Noah was 182 when his father died. In the Movie, it shows Noah out with his father, Lamech, performing a ceremony, and is killed by a group of men.  The Scriptures are vague on this, but the movie makes Noah out to be a teenage when his father dies and that is not true. Noah had brothers and sisters.   Moses 8:10

Good Together

Image
Around this time of year, for LDS (or Mormons) we get a break from the normal 3 hour block of church meetings, and have 6 hours of General Conference broadcast, and another two hours for the young men and men of the church.   Conference generally is the first weekend in April, So most years General Conference and Easter are on the same weekend.  So nothing better than Easter candy and conference.  Two things that go good together.  Oh and then you see someone talking in Conference that you know.  This is Wilfred Andersen of the Seventy.  He was in the Stake Presidency were I once lived, and his brother was my bishop when I had just gotten married. #30daychallenge

The Tie of the Day: November 16

Image
The Tie of the Day November 16 The Sun the Moon and the Stars As you know, I don't like to wear the same tie twice in a year unless I have too.  Well this is a little different.  I wore this tie earlier in the year when the Gilbert, Arizona Temple was dedicated.  Well on Sunday I got to attend the dedication of the Phoenix, Arizona Temple, at my stake center.  For LDS Members (Mormons) Temple are special places of worship.  It is a place that many of use can feel closer to God.

The Tower of Babel

In getting back to reading the scriptures, I have been reading the Bible as my daily scripture study.  I have always liked the stories from the Bible and find the history very interesting.   So last week I was a little disappointed when I read the story about the Tower of Babel.  I can’t tell you how long it has been since I last read the Old Testament, but it has been a very long time.  So somewhere I got in my mind that this was a really big story, that God came down and rained terror on the people for building the tower.  That he came down and destroyed it.  But when you start reading Genesis 11, I did not get this from the writer at all. In Verse 2, we learn that this is in the land of Shinar.  The next verse, we learn how they make bricks and use slime as mortar.  It is in verse 4, that the city and the tower are built. In Verses 5-8, this is where the Lord comes down and sees what the people are doing.  That they were...

The Genealogy of Adam

Image
This is one of the topics I have been researching in my scripture study.  Since I was 25, I have had an interest in genealogy.  I find it interesting to find that in Genesis 5, we have a full account of the linage from Adam to Noah.  I find it interesting the age that a person was when the the birth right child was born.  Also the ago at when they died.  The Genealogy of Adam Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born.  Adam died at the age of 930 years old. Seth was 805 years old when Enos was born.  Seth died at the age of 912 years old. Enos was 90 years old when Cainan was born.  Enos was 840 when he died. Cainan was 70 years old when Mahalaleel was born.  Cainan was 910 when he died. Mahalaleel  was 65 year old when Jared was born.  Mahalaleel  was 830 when he died. Jared was 162 year old when Enoch was born.  Jared was 962 when he died. Enoch was 65 years old when Methuselah was ...

Mental Illness, Depression, and Suicide, and what the LDS Church has to say about it,

After the death of Robin Williams, do to a suicide, it made me think of the churches stance on mental illness, depression and suicide.  I was sitting in a Elders Quorum meeting several months ago, and they were talking about repentance.  One person spoke up and said that the major cause of depression was ones feeling sorry for there sins.  As a person who has suffered from depression for many years, I knew that my depression was not because I had sin or for the choices I made in life.  Though no one knew about my fight with depression, there were a few that spoken up against this view point. Last October Conference, Elder Jeffery R Holland gave a talk entitled, "Like a Broken Vessel. Listen to what Elder Holland has to say on the subject of mental illness and depression. In the matter of suicide, the Church's Handbook #2 states this: It is wrong to take a life, including one’s own. However, a person who commits suicide may not be responsible for his or...

My Pioneer Heritage

This July 24th, mark the 167th anniversary of the Mormon's entering into the Great Salt Lake Valley.  This was there escape from religious prosecution.  This was also know from this time as the great gathering of Zion.  Mormon's from the Eastern States, from the British Isles, and Scandinavia, came Utah to be with like minded people.  This was not an easy trip and many lost there lives on the sea and on the plains.  For me I had several that made the trip.  Here are a few stories. On June 15, 1850 the David Evans Company left Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs), with 54 wagons.  There were 109 men, women and children is this company.  In this company was, Lorenzo Hill Hatch, my 2nd great grandfather.  He writes about his experience: We worked with Brother List three months, after which I bought him out and sent for Jeremiah. He came.  We worked through the fall and winter of 1849-50.  All that we mad was divided b...

Finished Reading the Book of Mormon

Image
I guess that I am some what a religious person, but that being said, I am also Mormon which most people know.  I guess I do not hide it very well.  But today I have to announce that I finished reading the Book of Mormon.  You are saying big deal, right.  Well, it is for me, because I have not read it in almost 24 years. This major piece of my churches cannon, I have not read it in such a long time. The reason is pretty simple, laziness.  I did not see any reason for it.  I am not a reader as it is anyway.  But for me, it was like, why read something that I have been reading since seminary and my mission.  I was not taken a break from it, but just did not see the point.  I knew what it said, I believe it, and I knew I would be called in at church to read selected verses from it from time to time, and that is all I needed. It is amazing that as I read, how the things I was reading, applied to what I was learning in Sunday school class. ...

Alma 26

I have had this as something that I wanted to write about for a while now.  When I read this Chapter in the Alma, he made understand the difference between Pride and Righteous Pride.  I thought this was how every, or how I hope, every missionary coming home from there mission felt.  For me it has taken awhile to realize the great work that I did in Ireland. In Alma 26, Ammon and his brothers are coming home from there mission. And it starts off in verse one: 1  And now, these are the words of Ammon to his brethren, which say thus: My brothers and my brethren, behold I say unto you, how great reason have we to rejoice; for could we have supposed when we  started  from the land of Zarahemla that God would have granted unto us such great blessings? Ammon goes on and starts listing off what they were able to do.  The mission was to the Lamanites.  Now the Lamanites had did not believe the same way as Ammon as his Brothers.  Plus they did n...

Getting back to my Spiritual Roots.

I have never seen myself as a spiritual person.  It has been that the past few years I have started to pray on a regular bases to where I at least say a pray once or twice a day.  At the beginning of this year, I started reading the Book of Mormon again.  The Book of Mormon is another set of scriptures that testifies of Jesus Christ, that is used by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, LDS or Mormons .  I started last year and some where, lost interest some where in Mosiah.  But today I find myself in Alma 43, two thirds of the way through Alma. My aunt Liz would be known or I saw it, the spiritual one of the Close Clan.  I remember when I was at her home when my Grandmother died, that she was up every morning, doing her Bible Study.  She was more in tuned with the spirit at that time, then I was.  Oh and I don't know which church she is a member of, but I do know it is Christian.  And I know that some of this of rub...

Why Hollywood, Why?

Over the weekend I watched two movies that made we question why we let Hollywood make movies which are against our believes.  I am not just talking about my own Mormon believes, but basic religious morals.  I know it has been going on for a long time, and we have the choice of what we watch, but why do we continue to watch this crap? The first one was Noah.  I am a big fan of Russell Crow, and I like a good action movie, but why could not Hollywood be true to the story of Noah.  Yes, the Movie did have Noah, an Ark, and the flood, but if that is all you know about Noah, then this was the movie for you.  Why could they not talk about him be a prophet, crying repentance unto the people.  Why could not all the sons be married?  And why do they have to make him out as a crazy man?  I have talked to several people about this movie and none has like what they saw.  I even heard in the theater, people saying openly that is not how it happened. ...

Noah the Movie

So I was talking to someone at church about seeing the Movie, Noah.  And I told them what I thought about it, and then they asked me, if I did not know anything about Noah, is it a good movie?  And this was not hard for me to answer, and I said Yes.  If you look at it as a Movie, it is a pretty good Action / Adventure Movie.  It had drama, conflict, and action, but we somewhat know how the movie ends. But before I went to see Noah, I wanted to brush up on Noah and went to the source, the Bible.  I heard some one say, how can you get a movie out of  few verses, but the story of Noah cover a lot more.  It story takes in Genesis Chapter 6 thru 10.   So I read the book before seeing the movie. And I think this is the problem that most Christians are having with the film.  It tries to follow the story, but how much literary licence are you going to get away with.  And that is the problem, they strayed to far from the original story. I ...
